According to this NY Times reporter, Scandinavian wealth doesn't add up. I'll stand for much of the criticism, but, when looking at this "wealth", how is West Virginia anywhere close to Sweden in terms of local arts, education, health care..? I step away from these sort of studies wondering what the US could be if they managed their funds as well as Sweden, or what Sweden could be if only they had the economic wealth of Iowa (!?). To quote Jack Sparrow, "not all treasure is glitter and gold, mate..." Meanwhile, I'll keep bagging my lunches.

I received a resounding slap on the hand when, at the first meeting of my discussion section for "Language, Voice, and Gender," I volunteered the argument that biological sex is real. Apparently, there are cultural standards (in the U.S. at least) for just what "measurements" constitute a baby girl or boy; outside the boundaries of standard deviation, the scalpel's vigilantly poised.
